The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) held its Research Symposium of 2023, a one-day symposium which aims to promote greater inclusivity and awareness on the digital society through the Digital Society Research Grant (DSRG) introduced by MCMC.
Themed ‘Building Awareness and Participation in Facilitating Malaysia’s Digital Society” some 150 participants from various sectors, including practitioners from the communications and multimedia industry, civil servants, and academicians in their commitment to uplift innovation in the digital society for future generations to come attended this year’s symposium.
The DSRG 2023 Cycle 1 focuses on addressing different aspects of digital society, as well as to inform actionable outcomes under categories for Digital Citizenship, Digital Cyberwellness, and Digital Inclusion. The scope of research also seeks to identify the regulatory and developmental gaps that impede the equality of access and challenges the paradigm of ensuring that no one is left behind or deprived of digital connectivity.
MCMC has received a total of 125 proposals from 33 local universities for the DSRG 2023 Cycle 1. Out of these submissions, the technical panel chaired by MCMC has selected 10 research projects for the DSRG awards, which covers a variety of topics including:
- – The level of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) adoption among the Communications and Multimedia Industry players, whereby it is expected to provide a comparative ESG benchmark, identify the challenges, opportunities and potential impacts of the ESG implementation among MCMC licensees.
- – The Consumer Perspective and Experience in Postal Article Safety Throughout Last-mile delivery for the postal and courier industry. This research aims at increasing quality of service and consumer satisfaction during last-mile delivery.
- – The digital healthcare adoption among Malaysian senior citizens, which aims to address the gaps, challenges and future needs that would improve the lifestyle quality among the ageing citizens of Malaysia.
The call for proposal for DSRG Cycle 2 is currently ongoing, having commenced from 1 August until the closing date of 31 August 2023. It encourages academicians and researchers to develop and submit their proposals for the areasrelevant to Digital Cyberwellness and Digital Inclusion. MCMC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, Puan Khaneeza Khalid, Head of MCMC Academy delivered the welcoming remarks to the participants. Also present was Prof. Datuk Dr. Denison Jayasooria, Head of All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia – Sustainable Development Goals (APPGM-SDG) Secretariat and President Society for the Promotions of SDGs.
